Epilepsy is one of the oldest and most mysterious conditions known to man. Although as long ago as 460 BC, Hypocrates claimed that seizures were due to afflictions of the brain, the myth has persisted until modern times that epilepsy is a manifestation of devil possession or a punishment of sin by God. The sudden onset of attacks and equally sudden disappearance only confirmed the long held view that supernatural powers were at work.

A retrospective analysis of the in-patients' case notes of 55 chronic epileptics admit ted for psychiatric treatment to Kuwait Psychological Medicine Hospital revealed that the commonest seizure type was generalized grand mal epilepsy. Adverse effects on marriage, education and occupation were common. It is concluded that epilep tics are more prone to have social difficulties, and that their marital status and fer tility are far from satisfactory. The findings of the present study are similar to those reported in the literature.

Epilepsy is a complicated neurological condition with variable manifestations, numerous etiologies, and a diverse range of treatments. It is a chronic disease that, in many cases, can be controlled. However, treatment requires accurate clinical evaluation to allow intelligent treatment choices. Epilepsy has been designed to help clinicians develop these evaluation skills. Expert neurologists have distilled the evidence and combined their experience.

There is no consensus on whether religiosity/spirituality (RS) acts as a form of social support in individuals with chronic diseases. Objective: To assess the relationship between the perception of social support and aspects of RS among adult people with epilepsy (PWEs). Methodology: Data from the Social Support Satisfaction Scale (SSSS) and the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality (BMMRS-P) were correlated with clinical variables and scores on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) in 44 PWEs, using statistical tests with p<0.05. Results: The study included 28F/16M, with a mean age and epilepsy duration of 44.3 and 28.1 years respectively. Lower scores on the SSSS (dimension and total score) were associated with alterations in the neurological examination and anxiety and depression on the HADS. There was a correlation between their perception regarding satisfaction with friends in the SSSS and the dimensions of private religious practices (Pearson correlation; -0.316; p=0.037) and religious support (-0.350; p=0.020) from the BMMRS-P. Clinical aspects were related to the BMMRS-P but not to the SSSS. Conclusion: There was a perception of compromised social support in epilepsy. RS measures are associated with a perception of greater social support, suggesting that RS may positively contribute to coping with psychosocial aspects in epilepsy.

The nature of self-help groups is discussed and considered with special reference to those composed of epileptics. Results of a preliminary survey of epilepsy self-help group members are presented, and effects relating to stigmatization, reasons for participation, asserted curative factors, and formal-only versus informal participation in the self-help group process are examined. Societal reaction to people with epilepsy is viewed as a major contributor to problems associated with this disability.
